5 Ways We Can Honor Former President Jimmy Carter's Life

Former President Jimmy Carter died yesterday. He was 100 years old. When I think of him, I don't often think of his time as president. I was too young. In fact, I was born on the day he was elected. My mom would often tell me that the nurses predicted I would become the first female president because of the timing of my birth. Anyway, I digress.

What I think about when I think of former President Carter is all of the humanitarian work he did post-presidency. That is the legacy he leaves behind. Here are 5 ways we can honor his life:

1. Volunteer Your Time for a Cause You Believe In

President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, dedicated their lives to service through organizations like Habitat for Humanity. By volunteering your time to build homes, support local food banks, or mentor young people, you can carry forward his commitment to helping others.

2. Advocate for Peace and Human Rights

Through the Carter Center, President Carter focused on promoting democracy, resolving conflicts, and fighting diseases worldwide. Honor his vision by getting involved with organizations that prioritize peace and justice or by staying informed about global issues.

3. Care for the Planet

President Carter was an environmental advocate long before it became mainstream. He famously installed solar panels on the White House during his presidency and supported clean energy initiatives. You can honor his environmental legacy by adopting sustainable practices in your own life, like reducing waste, conserving energy, or supporting renewable energy projects.

4. Support Voting Rights and Democracy

Carter was a tireless advocate for fair elections, both in the U.S. and abroad. In his honor, consider volunteering as a poll worker, supporting organizations that fight voter suppression, or simply helping a neighbor register to vote. Every action strengthens democracy.

5. Live Simply and Authentically

One of the most striking aspects of President Carter's life was his humility. He returned to his modest home in Plains, Georgia, after leaving the White House and lived a life centered around faith, family, and service. Honor his memory by focusing on what truly matters—relationships, kindness, and making a positive impact in the world.

As we reflect on the remarkable life of Jimmy Carter, let us not just admire him but emulate him. His life was a testament to the power of compassion, humility, and service. By following his example in these ways, we can ensure his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

XOXOXO
